Fin is a product I prototyped while I was the Chief Technical Officer of Fin Robotics aka RHL Vision, I was able to successfully develop the initial proof of concept models for it. Fin is a one of a kind wearable ring specially designed for a user's thumb, it is a BLE enabled gadget capable of tracking the movements of the thumb as well as the hand, the data collected is then used to identify special gestures. Fin was selected as one of the 15 best products from the world by Techcrunch to be showcased at the Hardware Battlefield competition during the Consumer Electronics Show 2014 (CES) in Las Vegas.I was able to pitch the product with our initial prototype , we also launched our crowd-funding for Fin during the same day on Indiegogo with a goal of 100,000$. The crowdfunding was tremendously successful , having raised more than 200,000$ with more than 1500 pre-orders, a testament to how it was already accepted by the consumers. Fin is unique from other controller devices since it can be used to interface with devices like smartphones, smartTV's, headmounted displays and even your car. It also provides a stress free controlling experience as it only recognizes your natural finger movemnts, unlike systems like Myo where stressed muscular actions are required or in Kinect/LeapMotion where the user is required to be in the line of sight of the device. So how does it Work?<br />
Fin has the capability to identify various gestures made by the user using it's onboard IMU and optical sensors and sends this data via Bluetooth/BLE to the smartdevice. Each gesture is mapped to perform a particular activity on the smartdevice (smartphones/ smartTV's, etc) using softwares and applications that run on the background ; for example : swiping your thumb up/down on your index finger could be used to change the volume on your smartdevice, swiping left/right on your palm to change the soundtracks on the device, etc. Some of the many use cases of Fin are :<br />

<li>Seeks to eliminate the need for a user to take their phone out of their pockets for simple tasks like answering calls, changing soundtracks, notifications, etc.</li>
<li>Could be used while the user's hands are engaged in other activities, like during driving, exercising, etc. </li>
<li>Could be used during working out to measure body movements, calories burnt, etc.</li>
<li>Could be used to measure irregular sleep patterns.</li>
<li>Can be used during gaming to give the user a touch less playing experience, hence utilizing the entire screen for viewing.</li>
</ol>
Fin has enormous potential for the future. The system I made , was due to a special request from Startup Village who recently had inaugurated their 10K building. They wanted a system where they could monitor information regarding when all the power was being supplied and when it was not, also where they could monitor the status of the internet whenever it comes and goes, also to monitor the speed of the internet at regular intervals , so this need led to the the rise of the power logger. This is basically a system where a user could just plug in the device to a LAN and power it from a wall socket , and which will allow it's user to see all information regarding the power status/ consumption, internet status and internet speed all through a webpage. The system basically consists of a microprocessor board running on Linux, the coding was done on python and it runs on the background. The system was designed in such a way that, even when the power is off the device is supported by it's onboard UPS consisting of a 8A 12V battery and heavy duty voltage regulators. The system determines whether power is available or not by monitoring the status of the wall socket onto which it is plugged. Here, the system is also intelligent enough to save data when there is no internet and posts them all together sequentially once it is back online. The client side of the system consists of a very simple webpage displaying various information such as power status, internet status, internet speed, etc. The system:<br />

The system gained a lot of recognition, especially from the Minister for Electricity in Kerala, Mr.Aryadan Mohammed and KSEB chairman, Mr.M Sivasankar who further suggested that such a system could be used to monitor power and it's consumption in huge factories having highly expensive machinery which are capable of getting damaged by the power outages. They also said that it would help build a better conscience among people if they could know their current power consumption and take necessary steps to reduce it. So this one must be the most hardest and frustrating one of them all, everyone must be familiar with the 4 motor propelled flying copter from the movie 3 idiots, so in the movie there was a situation where the damn smart Ranchhoddas Shamaldas Chhanchad (Aamir Khan) saves the day by helping a kid to complete his project which was this. So, in my case the Quadrotor( technically called) was not worked upon overnight like as in the movie, it was the longest project that consumed something like a year to complete. It wolks by having 4 propellers ( 2 rotating clockwise and other 2 anti clockwise) to provide upward thrust.I would be explaining the technicalities involved below.</div>

The most fundamental part is tuning for the PID constants Kp, Ki, Kd , which was done by the same old trial and error method, after which filtering and estimating the angle values with minimum delay can be considered as a killer. The program loop is 115Hz.The most exciting part of this project is the ability to work with the highly powerful brushless motors (and there are 4 of them) achieving rpm's >10,000.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; text-align: left;">These motors need to be powered using a ultra powerful but compact light weight battery (as it adds to the payload) and hence comes in the LiPo (short for Lithium Polymer), I have used a 4000mAH, 75 C, 3S turnigy battery. The motors are controlled via ESC's (Electronic Speed Controllers), which are indeed controlled by a microcontroller using PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) signals.</span></div>

I had the honor to showcase my project (RideSmart, as it got renewed) for controlling all the basic car features such as Air Conditioning, Central Locking, Engine Start, Acceleration, Parking Lights, etc using a normal smartphone. The system has now been redesigned for the Blackberry OS10 based smartphones running on the QNX kernel. The application is now faster, smoother and sexier than before.<br />

I was given the honor to meet Mr.Sijo Kuruvilla George (CEO Startup Village) via Mr.Anand Subramanian again via Mr.Jithu KM. I was able to impress him using this application , and with the help of a small demonstration too. Mr.Sijo was then able to connect me with Mrs.Annie Mathew (Director, Business and Alliances at Blackberry) , who was also pretty driven by this . She then granted me the opportunity to showcase this project along with the car during their Blackberry OS10 launch that had taken place at February 25 at Mumbai.Blackberry had also let me get my hands on the latest BB OS10 device, for further testing and development of the application. The phone is pretty powerful, with a sweet cam and sweeter UI.</div>

<b><u>Blackberry Live Orlando</u></b><br />
As I was given the opportunity to become a Blackberry Elite VIP member I was able to attend the Blackberry Live conference at Orlando, USA. Other than that I had access to various blackberry products, softwares and direct access to many people there.<br />
The experience at Blackberry Live was excellent. I was able to attend sessions by the CEO Thorsten Heins , by the CMO Frank Boulben and even the influential Alicia Keys. The conference was amazing, with every attendee getting a cool new BB Z10 device!! Being an elite member also gave me several other priveleges such as to interact and meet with the CMO Frank Boulben , Alec Saunders, the Vice President of Developer Relations, etc.<br />

The Conference was held in various sessions and common meetings across different halls and rooms. It saw people from all over the globe, even though particularly few Indians . It continued for 3-4 days, with sessions ranging from enterprise solutions to basic app development. There were a whole lot of volunteers dedicated for this too. <br />

The conference took place at the ground floor of the Marriott. The pic shows just a small part of the hotel. The showcase area on the left featured various booming applications and systems using the new BB10 platform, it saw everything from educational apps to Lewis Hamilton's F1 car :) The arrangement was perfect with a snack bar on the side and spirits on it's opposite. Each showcase had to be registered for the demo earlier itself. The event also saw the revealing of the QNX's Bentley, I was forwarded by Alec Saunders to Ms.Linda Campbell, VP of QNX when I had showed a demo of my app to them. The guys at QNX, Mark Rigley and Andrew Poliak The engineers who developed th eQNX bentley system were very impressed from my application when they saw that I could even start the engine and revv it up. They jokingly said after all the excitement "Would you like a job!!" :)<br />

The main reason for me to do this project Gspeed was that, I was incapable of carrying around something small without losing it one way or the other. In this case, I used to consistently lose the keys to my Honda Dio scooter which led me to making a bunch of duplicate keys for it. Even though, these keys would work fine, I began to think about what someone can do if they obtained the keys to my scooter. Well, obviously being from where I am that sounds no good, so I designed this fail proof or a fool proof system for security while simultaneously serving other uses as well.<br />

<span style="text-align: left;">So, the system is a security enforcer. Here, I have developed a pass code based access system to my scooter. So, basically only a person who knows this ‘n’ digit pass code may have access to it. Hence even though if any guy possessing my key tries to jack my scooter he will not be able to use it without my pass code combination. The system also allows the user to change the pass code on the spot whenever he/she desires via a custom user interface provided by me, in case if the user feels insecure about his pass code combination. Here, unless the person enters the correct pass code combination he/she will not be able to access any of the features of the scooter. Even kick starting the engine will not work without the pass code combination. When the correct pass code is entered the engine immediately starts automatically while simultaneously granting access to all the other vehicular features as well. Here, the pass code has to be entered via this keypad provided on the scooter’s dash, whereas the system activation switch is the red missile switch to the right above it. To safely enforce the device, the missile switch cover has to be merely shut down after use.<br />
The system, I designed works by first switching on the system ON switch and then inputting the ‘n’ digit pass code combination and then pressing the key ‘A’ to enter it. To change the pass code, the user simply has to enter ‘B’ and then enter the present pass code, if that is right then the user may enter his new pass code and then press ‘A’ to save it. The visual feedback of this process is seen via a LCD screen mounted on the scooter as you shall see in the working demo video below.<br />

The system as soon as it is activated then leads on to the GPS speedometer aka Gspeed user interface that is the same GPS based speedometer I had developed for my scooter earlier as explained and portrayed in project no: 2 in this blog. It has the following functions: Present speed, lap time, surrounding temperature, latitude and longitude coordinates, fuel level, date, time, and other vehicular information like registered number, etc.<br />
The system I designed consists of hardware components like an ATMega328 microcontroller with a custom designed PCB incorporating relays, GPS modules, temperature sensors, high current voltage regulators, character LCD’s , keypad, ON/OFF switch etc. The hardware is all tucked away neatly inside a 4X4 inch plastic black box inside the front cover of the scooter as shown below:<br />

The applications and advantages of the project include:<br />
1. Firstly, it does not allow any guy who thinks he can steal my Dio using a key that I lost hehe.<br />
2. The system is a full proof protector; it won’t allow functioning without the correct pass code.<br />
3. Allows spontaneous pass code changing options.<br />
4. Does not require use of keys for access, a keyless operating system.<br />
5. Allows a user to safely park his vehicle without having the tension of anyone trying to hack it using a duplicate key or other methods.<br />
6. Provides GPS based speed data and a bunch of other data from other sensors.<br />
7. Sleek and stylish design even looks cool.<br />

Okay, here I have automated my room in order to control the various electrical devices like lights, fans, and even closing and opening of curtains or doors , etc. This type of automation completely relies on the user's speech commands. Hence a user will be able to control the various devices via merely his/her voice in their desired language from anywhere within the room. Thus, a guy who is too lazy to get out from the bed in the morning to switch on the lights or open the curtains may simply do this by asking the system to do so from the bed itself.A pic of my system is as shown below:<br />

Here, I have used a custom voice recognizer system along with it's provided software using which I trained the commands into the system. A quick sound synthesizer was also used to upload vocal responses for the system when approached by any user. Here, In this system a password protection is provided so that only the real owner of the room may use it, on saying the correct password the system acknowledges back using it's vocal response. Now the system is ready to take on any commands from the user such as to turn ON the lights, fan, open curtains ,lock doors ,etc. When a person wants to leave the room and wishes to secure it, then he/she has to simply say the command "Lock down the room", by which the system is once again password protected preventing any unauthorized use of the device and discouraging intruders. The hardware setup mainly consists of an AT Mega 328 micro controller which is seated on a custom designed PCB board, soldered by me. The custom PCB board mainly consists of a bunch of relays (12V,7A) for controlling each of the individual functions, a relay driver , crystal oscillators , etc. The lines from the switch board are taken out and fed into these relays. Next comes the voice recognizer module seated below the custom PCB board, it communicates serially with the micro controller. Then comes the speaker amplifier unit used for amplifying the speech signals from the module , that is to be given to the speaker box as shown in the 1st pic.The custom PCB board is as shown:<br />

5.Improved room security providing password protection feature for securing the room.<br />
6.The system provides a vocal feedback to the user as well , to acknowledge the commands.<br />

Once I studied that i could control all the functions of a scooter, using a bit of android programming, I moved off to something bigger and useful. I first tried out my system on my friend's Honda City, as my father wan't ready to give me his car. After a bit of persuasion from his colleagues , he agreed to give it to me. In the case of my friend Sunil's Honda City, I had to figure out the wiring for the igniton and engine by just using an ordinary multimeter. I was so happy when those headers roared for the first time at the push of a button from my phone. After , working on the Honda City I moved on to my Santro Xing, now I didn't want to take any risk ,so I went directly to the Hyundai service centre and with the expertise of the technicians I was able to understand the wiring of my car, I was thrilled by the response of the people at Hyundai once I showed a demo to the entire staff there.<br />

I programmed my android phone to create a mainframe which is like a UI for my car, by pushing the respective buttons on my phone. I am able to access all the basic functions of my car, such as : engine start, ignition on/off, Air Conditioning, Parking lights, Central locking system.The newly fabricated system is as shown:<br />

As, I was introduced to the exciting new world of android, I became aware of it’s infinite possibilities. I found out different ways to manipulate the android O.S. , to create softwares that had functionalities extending from beyond the phone itself. In this project I have created an android software to control a small model of a car, which is also integrated with a line follower mode. Even though the motor speed’s not significant enough , I am able to completely control it using phone.<br />

The different functions programmed into it are: front, back, left, right and stop. And, the most unique thing is that it is programmed with a line follower mode, i.e., if you press that particular button then the robot becomes completely autonomous and begins following a black line.All this can be done at a distance of 100m from the RC car.The type of connection used here is based on bluetooth working at about 2.5Ghz, preventing the distortions that may occur at lower frequencies.<br />

In this project I am using an ATMega328 microcontroller along with a bluetooth module, also equipped with two continous rotation servo motors and it's corresponding wheels, it also comes with a QTR8A reflectance sensor array to enable it to work in autonomous line follower mode.The basic setup is as shown in the pic:<br />

I started off by programming my phone with the basic UI to control my car, providing separate buttons for each type of movement of the car.I transmitted the corresponding commands via bluetooth to my RC car, the car then decodes these bluetooth signals via a bluetooth module, and the microcontroller identifies these signals and does the particular function corresponding to that button.My RC car uses a differential drive system, hence it requires only two servo motors in the front and an omni directional wheel at the back.And the best feature which is the line follower mode is enabled once that particular button is pressed. <br />
And if you have already prepared a black line using an insulation tape, then you just have to navigate the car to the beginning of that circuit and press the line follower button, and then my device calibrates the position of the black line and begins to follow it through all sorts of curves.The pic below shows the reflectance sensor used:<br />

Okay, this project is the one that has been "patent" protected it, showcases the world's first android phone controlled scooter
(Honda Dio), this concept is purely unique, and has many applications.I have
created an application for an android pone to control the basic functions of a
scooter.<br />
Even though i had to wait for a long time to get an android phone,thanks to my
mom I got one of the best available sets, the Samsung Galaxy S, even though any
android phone can work with my application.The idea came to me while i was in
bed, cluelessly thinking about stuff when i was not able to sleep during my
exam time.<br />
After taking a crash course on eclipse and java programming using the internet,
i was able to do the programming for my phone to send the necessary bluetooth
commands.<br /><br />
In the case of the headlights , it remains ON until the user presses the OFF
button via the android application.So by using my application (My Ride) , a
person can turn the engine ON, or the headlights ON or the horn.All these
functions can be accessed through the phone from a distance of about 100m,

The applications and uses of this system are countless, some of the basic

1.Provides keyless accessing , no need to carry those bulky key sets ,when u
just need an android phone and my application.<br />
2.No other system, allows you to access the headlights , horn as well as the
engine accessing capabilities.<br />
3.Provides a total anti theft solution , as the vehicle can only be accessed
and used through your phone.<br />
4.Even when another person , having the same application and system installed
in his vehicle, tries to access yours, it wont be possible as i have provided a
12 character identification id for each vehicle.<br />
5.No need to worry about loosing your keys, if you would like another person to
use your vehicle, you could just send the application to his phone.<br />
6.The system has a range of about 100m unlike no other remote controlled
system, increasing range of accessing.<br />
7.Can be used for other purposes like cheap show offs or to play a prank on
someone,etc LOL.<br />

The basic principle behind it is that, the reflecting properties of a black line are much more negligible as compared to a white surface, so using a sensor which simultaneously sends out an IR (Infra Red) beam as well as, absorbs the reflected beam from either a white surface or a black line using it's IR receivers.<br />
When the sensor moves over a black line the reflection of the IR beam will be very less , as a result the IR receiver is exposed to the minimum amount of IR rays ,thus as the connection is taken from across this receiver , onto the micro controller , the system measures maximum amount of voltage, it will observe minimum amount of voltage when the sensor moves over a white surface. The devices used for this project are an ATMega 328 micro controller, a QTR 8A polulo reflectance sensor array, 2 continous rotation servo motors. The chassis of my robot is made from the material we use for switchboards, because of the extreme low range of sensitivity of the sensor (<0.5cm), I had to carefully fabricate 2 supporting legs for the sensor, so that it is in close proximity with respect to the ground. The motors are powered using 6V batteries (AA), and the servos are programmed and controlled via PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) signals, these are continuous rotation servos providing 360 degrees of freedom.<br />

Okay, this is one of the things which I made under 4 hours, it is a portable GPS location monitoring system, which can be carried around by a person usually adventure seekers or trekkers, to know their exact position , as GPS data is obtained directly from the satellite, you can use this device to find out your location on any part of the Earth. It can be easily carried around due to its compact design, it can be used in cars, buses, etc,and the greatest advantage is that it's cost, conventional GPS systems cost from about Rs.9000, I can provide the basic GPS data at about Rs.3000.<br />

This system can be used for professional runners to monitor their speed of movement, as it is displayed on the 2 20*4 LCD displays provided.I have used a cirocomm 20L GPS module for the purpose.<br />
The NMEA data from the module is deciphered using a Tiny GPS library, to extract the latitude,longitude coordinates as well as universal date and time.The system may even be attached to the helmet of a bike rider , so that ,these data become more accessible to the person.<br />
I have made the device from nothing but an ordinary plastic box,which was modified to incorporate the devices as shown in the pics:<br />

I can proudly say that this was one of the projects which made me the happiest.It earned me recognition in a lot of places around Kerala.It is actually a Hovercraft, i.e., an amphibious vehicle which can travel through land ,ice, water, etc.<br />

The most important part of a hovercraft is it's skirt, there are many skirt designs available like bag skirt ,wall skirt, finger skirts,etc they all have their unique purpose.<br />
The first motor is used to provide forward propulsion to the craft and the second motor provides a vertical lift,by building up air pressure beneath it, and encapsulating it using a skirt.<br />
I used a wall skirt design in my hovercraft, i made it using about 4 sheets of a polyplastic material(The black trash bags we use) which was cut and stitched up together to serve the purpose , after many calibrations and modifications i was able to set up the basic hovercraft as shown in the video here, it could even support my entire body weight:<br />

The next step of the build was the setting up of a driver control system to control it.<br />
What makes my hovercraft unique from all the others are that , it is controlled using a glove which you wear in your hand, the instructions to operate it is as shown in the video below.I even hooked it up with GPS, so that we can find out it's current location.<br />
I used two ATMega168's on the receiver and transmitter sections i.e., on the glove and on the hovercraft,<br />
I used an ADXL 3-axis accelerometer sensor(it works on the piezo electric principle) for tilt measurements of my hand, the data communication was using 2 Xbee modules(2.4GHz), the hovercraft has a load of other features explained in the video below,I used 2 servo motors for the rudder(to control the direction of movement) and another for a LED array.I can control my hovercraft from about 30 feet away.<br />
Some of the features of it are:<br />
1.It is completely controlled using a glove(worn by the operator) ,completely unique.<br />
2.Turning the craft on/off is controlled by the vertical motion of the hand (as in video).<br />
3.It is hooked up to a GPS module, to provide the speed of movement and the correct location.<br />
4.It is provided with temperature monitoring of it's two electric motors.<br />
5.Automatic light detection, when it moves into dark regions , it lights up an array of high power LED's on the front, it turns off as soon as it enters into a well lit area.<br />
6.The LED light array points correctly to the direction of movement, providing enhanced vision.<br />
7.The glove provided for control is very user friendly and requires minimum expertise to operate.<br />

Okay, I can officially say that, the first Indian dio with a customised digital speedometer with GPS was mine.<br />
Even though i was terribly sad when my parents said they wont buy me a bike , i got over myself using my faithful dio, FOXGLOVE customised the ride for me giving it some awesome blue graphics and giving it the signature mean boy handle bar.But, I wanted more, so i thought of making my own digital speedometer for it, but digital meter? they were so common , so I gave it an edge by providing GPS for it.<br />

This was the initial state of my speedometer, but i modified it again before attaching it to my Honda Dio, I provided an LM35 temperature sensitive transistor to get the engine as well as surrounding temperature.<br />
My GPS data was in the form of NMEA(National Marine Electronics Association) codes, which was deciphered to obtain the latitude and longitude coordinates, the universal date as well as time, since the communication was directly with the satellites , a small delay is experienced during the startup time, as the signal has to go from earth to the outer space and then back(phew..!), it could also show the mean height of the land above sea level and loads of other data including speed.<br />
I even hooked my meter to my Dio's fuel sensor, so it also showed the fuel reading, the fuel sensor inside it was an ohmic variable resistor, when the tank was empty it showed a high resistance value , and when it was filled to the maximum, it showed a minimum resistance value, so I used my microcontroller to measure the resistance of the sensor and convert it to a % value with respect to the difference between the maximum and minimum resistance values.Here is the video showing the speedometer on my Dio:<br />

Here is a list showing the features of my Digital speedometer:<br />
1.Shows the Lap Time i.e. the time for which the engine remains ON.<br />
2.It shows the surrounding temperature accurately in degree C.<br />
3.It shows the actual registration no: of the vehicle.<br />
4.It shows the location of the person using the latitude and longitude coordinates from the GPS.<br />
5.It shows the universal date and current time.<br />
6.It shows the fuel level in %.<br />
7.And finally it shows the speed.<br />
8.It may even show the name of the rider, after programming.<br />

The actual location of the vehicle could be found out, by entering the latitude and longitude coordinates of the GPS module in the google map.Surprisingly I even got a lot of orders from many people around India, to make it for them.<br />

Even though this is not actually my first project, (worked on many before this), I started recording my creations from this. First of all, i made my rocket candy composition by mixing many compounds together such as ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate, magnesium, sulphur and normal sugar, I powdered and mixed all these together to form my rocket fuel mixture. So, here is a video showing me testing the obtained rocket fuel mixture, the explosion was completely unpredictable, it led to a slight discoloration on my hand, hehe.<br />

After the testing of the mixture, I stuffed it and compacted it into a small pvc pipe, and drilled a narrow hole through the solid mixture, at the bottom i provided an electric fuse , so that i can ignite the rocket from a safe distance.<br />
The ignition system consists of a high resistance carbon led along with matchstick chemicals, aluminium,etc, the carbon leed is heated using a 30V supply , causing the remaining substances to light up, here is a video depicting my ignition system:<br />

And finally all of this led to my rocket, it went up approx 30 feet in the air, which was quite high compared to the little fuel i gave it, i gave a long line to control the ignition , so that i could watch it go from a safe distance,here the impact of the rocket was so strong that it actually blasted away a high density soda bottle (The kind used for making carbonated drinks).However i had to abandon my research in this field , due to the lack of available compound mixtures and resources, here is the video:<br />
